About Us

    • ourcommunitychest.co.za is a non-profit company dedicated to providing a wide range of support for the benefit & upliftment of our community through our creation of out-of-the-box, sustainable, long-term social investment initiatives
    • we work in collaboration with our community, businesses and local private enterprises
    • this participatory and collaborative approach bolsters our organised efforts to improve the social, economic, and environmental well-being of our community by addressing and establishing sustainable solutions the identified challenges in our community social determinants
    • it’s about following our hearts and plugging purpose into our passion, we look at humanitarianism as a way of life, rather than just a way to “give back”
    • we embody the philosophy of “ubuntu – I am because we are” and believe that “a rising tide lifts all boats”
    • our commitment to independence and impartiality allows us, our partners and volunteers to take action in instances where politics / bureaucracy might otherwise slow humanitarian response efforts

Our philosophy

  • communities that are empowered are more resilient in the face of challenges – when we have the power and resources to address our challenges, we are better equipped to adapt and respond to change; which means that we are more likely to bounce back from setbacks and continue to thrive
  • the most effective community investment initiatives are generally long-term, align with core business and personal values; competencies & involve collaboration with local stakeholders to ensure sustainable, meaningful change
  • instead of one-off, “tick-box” activities, our strategic initiatives seek to create a measurable, dual ROI (ie return on integrity) for both the community and private sector enterprises – because we believe in building bridges, not walls!
  • social determinants of health refers to non-medical factors in the environments where we are live, work and play and account for anywhere from 30-55% of health outcomes
  • understanding the need for and challenges in our community social determinants allows us to assess what’s needed most in our community and then take the proper measures to work collectively and co-operatively toward achieving our goals
  • reducing inequities around these factors results in a positive health outcome on both community and individual levels

The Big Picture

Initiatives & programs your funds and supplies are currently used for:

  1. Poverty relief & basic needs – providing essential aid such as food assistance to local soup kitchens, food banks, clothing for homeless, required items to local charities / homes as per their specific needs.

  2. Education & Youth development – providing support after-school & holiday programs, provide food assistance to schools feeding scheme as required

  3. Health & Wellness – providing support through tailor-made care packages

  4. Community Development – partnering with corporates to create custom initiatives and activities – funds are used for direct contribution

  5. Environment – partnering with schools for local clean-up initiatives and community engagement activities 

  6. Animal Welfare – support local rescue shelters, clinics and re-homing facilities

  7. Lashes & Staches events – events created by The Trading Place to raise funds for Our Community Chest and/or specific cause/s
